Middle-earth™ Pre-order Preview – Forth Eorlingas!
This week’s pre-order preview sees us returning to Middle-earth for the first time in an Age… Adam Troke: When the project to relaunch the Strategy Battle Game got underway, we knew early on that we wanted a starter boxed set that would give newcomers to the hobby, and seasoned veterans alike, something to sink their teeth into. The Battle of Pelennor Fields boxed set is just that, loaded with 84 plastic miniatures, including the brand-new Théoden, King of Rohan, and the mighty Witch-king on his Fell Beast to oppose him. After levering open the glorious box cover (complete with the noble Théoden and foul Witch-king… and Minas Tirith merrily ablaze in the background), you are greeted by a veritable Dragon’s hoard of plastic frames. Carefully lift the frames aside, and there’s a sturdy piece of card protecting your Rules Manual and other bits from impalement… and doubling as your assembly guide. Delve beneath that and you’ll find the 208-page hardback Rules Manual for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game, a 16-page Scenarios and Profiles booklet, dice, measurers and tokens. Oh, and bases for all your models. The Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game is one of Good vs Evil, and you’ll see that portrayed in this starter set. The heroic forces of Good are represented by the muster of Rohan and the Army of the Dead. First of all, there is the glorious new plastic Théoden, King of Rohan. This stunning character model (on foot and mounted on Snowmane) is the first new plastic model for The Lord of the Rings™ in nearly a decade. Alongside Théoden are 12 Riders of Rohan and 12 Warriors of Rohan. These bold warriors are the heroic men who risk all to save the White City from the legions of Mordor… and they’re the core of a fantastic Rohan army. Each Rider of Rohan is a dangerous foe, whether in melee or at range (even the ones wielding axes or swords have bows slung on their backs)… together they are a fast-moving and hard-hitting cavalry force. The Warriors of Rohan might be somewhat more utilitarian, but they’re still sturdy soldiers ready to vanquish the armies of Sauron (they are also great for using as dismounted Riders of Rohan whose steeds are slain in battle). There is also a ghostly battalion in the form of the oath-breakers of Dunharrow which includes 20 Warriors of the Dead, ready to right an ancient wrong and join the fight. Not only do these ethereal warriors tower over the Orcish rabble they fight, but their ghostly weapons also cut through them with unnatural ease. The Battle of Pelennor Fields is the most decisive encounter of the War of the Ring, where the full might of Sauron’s armies is arrayed against the White City. To lead this all-conquering throng is the Dark Lord’s greatest servant, the Witch-king of Angmar, atop his monstrous Fell Beast. Winged Nazgûl are renowned as some of the most powerful units available to the forces of Evil, and the Witch-king is the undisputed master of them all (arrayed against Théoden, who faces his sternest challenge). At the Witch-king’s command are 36 Morannon Orcs – enough heavy infantry to sweep away almost any foe. Morannon Orcs are among Sauron’s most vicious foot soldiers – strong, tough and eager destroy the world of Men. As any veteran of the Strategy Battle Game will attest, a force of Orcs of this size is the core of a truly deadly Evil army. Of course, they’re not alone in their efforts to raze the White City – the Evil models in Battle of Pelennor Fields are bolstered by a hulking Mordor Troll. This towering beast is a bulwark of muscle and iron, able to weather injuries that would slay lesser creatures with ease… and with a massive war hammer and a selection of Brutal Power Attacks at its disposal, the Mordor Troll is perhaps the most dangerous model in the entire boxed game. The hardback rules manual found in the box contains the full rules for the Strategy Battle Game – 208 pages loaded with rules for your games. Don’t be daunted by the size of this beauty, though – the Strategy Battle Game was founded many years ago on the mantra that it’s easy to learn and hard to master, and nothing has changed here. Throughout the manual, rules are clearly explained with examples and accompanied by stunning imagery from both The Lord of the Rings™ and The Hobbit™ movie trilogies. There’s also the 16-page Scenarios and Profiles guide, which contains four Narrative Play Scenarios designed to get you playing your first games in Middle-earth and the profiles and special rules for the models in the box. To play the game, you’re also going to need some accessories, and Battle of Pelennor Fields contains everything to get you started. There are twelve dice (six red, six green) to solve your dice-rolling needs and a pair of themed range rulers – one styled after Rohan, the other after Mordor. To help keep track of in-game effects (charging cavalry, failed Courage tests and so on) there’s a sheet of counters too. In short, everything you need to play your first few games. This unique pack of range measurers is something new for the Strategy Battle Game – a set of 7 hard plastic replica weapons from The Lord of the Rings™ designed to help you check ranges and measure during your games. They are faithfully based on the wargear from the movies, and they’re also super-handy when you’re playing the game. Each weapon in the set has a different size… with some of them especially appropriate. Sting is 4″, which is how far Hobbits can move, while Gimli’s axe is 5″ long (the typical move for a Dwarf). Even Gandalf’s staff is 12″ long, which just so happens to be the range of most Magical Powers. Oh, and there’s a nifty double-sided Priority marker in the set too. One side has the White Tree while the other displays the baleful Eye of Sauron – perfect for showing whether Good or Evil has Priority this turn. This massive tome of rules is the definitive source for all of the models from our The Lord of the Rings™ range – from the famed heroes of The Fellowship of the Ring™ to the Dark Lord Sauron, lumbering Mûmakil, the Balrog of Morgoth and loads more besides. In fact, there are more than 260 different profiles for the heroes and warriors of The Lord of the Rings™, organised into iconic army lists. Each army list also includes a special bonus you unlock in Matched Play games if your force is suitable thematic. As well as all the profiles, The Armies ofThe Lord of the Rings™ also includes 11 Narrative Play scenarios, designed to help you recreate some of the most iconic events and battles from the history of Middle-earth, including the fall of Khazad-dûm and the Ambush at Amon Hen. All of this is jammed into a 240-page sourcebook, along with glorious imagery from The Lord of the Rings™ and fantastic miniatures photography.
You’re only a week and a day away from being able to sink your teeth into your own copy of Codex: Space Wolves – and to tide you over, we’re providing ANOTHER in-depth preview of just what this latest codex means for your army.
This time around, we’re looking at cunning Stratagems, a new system of Warlord Traits that rewards thematic play, powerful Relics of the Fang and a host of new psychic powers for your Rune Priests: With 27 Stratagems to choose from, your Space Wolves army will have a dizzying array of tactical options available to it. One of the most flexible is Cunning of the Wolf, an alternative deployment option that lets you flank your enemy and set up devastating attacks: You’ll also be wanting to keep key units in your army safe. Space Wolves have access to an incredible (if costly) Stratagem that does just that: The Stratagems in Codex: Space Wolves are designed to add individual character to your units to reflect their abilities and training. The Wolf’s Eye, for example, enhances your Long Fangs with re-rolls to hit or to wound, allowing you to adjust their tactics as needed. As well as providing gameplay benefits, the Space Wolves Stratagems are flavourful and thematic, filling your battles with epic moments and heroism worthy of the greatest sagas of Fenris. One of our favourites is Lone Wolf – a new take on an iconic aspect of Space Wolves lore that transforms the last survivor of your chosen squad into an unstoppable juggernaut of berserker vengeance: With the Hunters Unleashed and these Stratagems, every Space Wolf in your army will feel like a hero. Speaking of heroes… Mere Warlord Traits wouldn’t be heroic enough for the Space Wolves. Instead, each has an epic Saga – a two-part trait that rewards you for playing in an appropriately valourous manner. Every Saga starts the game as an enhancement that affects your Warlord, offering them more attacks, bonuses to hit, improvements to their aura abilities and so on. However, each Saga also has an associated Deed of Legend – a valiant task that, when completed by your Warlord, transforms their Saga into a powerful aura ability! Some, like the Saga of the Bear, reward you for leading from the front of your army: Others, like Saga of the Beastslayer, reward you for getting stuck into combat: In short – play like a true Wolf Lord, and you’ll be granted powerful abilities. Of course, to accomplish such legendary deeds, you’ll need some legendary weapons… The armouries of the Fang swell with storied weapons and armour – and you’ll be able to equip some of the most legendary with the new codex. The Armour of Russ stood out for us, serving to lock down enemy characters and potentially buy enough time for the rest of your close-combat units to take them out: Frostfury, on the other hand, is a deadly storm bolter that fires helfrost bolter rounds to deal punishing amounts of damage – it’s basically a pocket autocannon: Combined with the Sagas above, you’ll have a huge amount of choice for customising your favourite characters, creating anything from legendary Wolf Lords to particularly talented Rune Priests – and that’s before we consider psychic powers… …or, as the Rune Priests would have you believe, the elemental powers of Fenris. Whatever they are, Space Wolves now have a fully fledged discipline of powers to draw from. Living Lightning can potentially devastate weakened armies, chaining onto new targets whenever it finishes a unit off: Fury of the Wolf Spirits, on the other hand, is a close-combat psychic power that gives your chosen Rune Priest a hail of armour-shredding attacks: You won’t have long to wait before you can get your hands on Codex: Space Wolves and start using these Stratagems, Warlord Traits, Relics and psychic powers yourself. The codex is on pre-order tomorrow, alongside the Tooth and Claw boxed set. In the meantime, we’d recommend you pick up a Primaris Rune Priest (or “Librarian”, to the uninitiated) – an ideal psychic accompaniment to your forces from Tooth and Claw. |
