What Remains (thats what the RPG is called) is a very unique Roleplaying game system, Remember the '90s? Crop tops, body glitter, grunge, Dunkaroos®, and Friends? How about the Y2K Scare? What Remains is a tabletop roleplaying game set in an alternate timeline of Earth where Y2K went down exactly as we had feared. When the clock struck midnight, ringing in the new millennium, computers everywhere glitched. Nukes were launched, reactors melted down, the earth quaked, nuclear winter fell, disease was rampant, and famine became the new fad diet. It's a post-apocalyptic story frozen in the 1990s with raiders, mutant creatures, warring factions, zombies, and all the '90s nostalgia you could wish for. (Taken from their Kickstarter Page) I know, I know another post apocalypse roleplaying game vying for your money, but seriously hold on and let me take you on a wild ride and I promise you will be throwing your hard earned money at them! Firstly The Team behind What Remains are a husband and wife team who seem to have broken the norms when it comes to working with your spouse!, they have come together brilliantly to create such a well thought out game. They have amassed alot of detail into this game, Secondly what makes this game different from the others in this genre? Well lets take a look! The TIPICAL System to start with is unique and as follows: The TIPICAL engine is powered by the TIPICAL stats: • Tenacity – Mental and Physical Toughness • Impact – Raw Physical Strength • Intellect – Mental Capacity and Power • Charisma – Force of Personality • Agility – Dexterity and Hand-Eye Coordination • Luck – Do you feel lucky, punk? These stats, combined with one (or more) of 28 skills, provides thousands of possible roll combinations that cover an almost infinite number of scenarios. Using this system, in tandem with our static damage calculations, creates a game system that produces fast moving combat, endless adventure possibilities, and each to understand rules that still allow for massive customization and rich, deep character development. Now I have actually played the playtest for these rules and I can tell you if you want something almost completely random and unexpected then this TIPICAL system is the one for you, DND and Pathfinder to name a few have stats (otherwise the games would be a mess DUH!) but they are predictable, limited and restrictive. This system is different in the ways that also make the TIPICAL system unique. Characters have flaws not just roleplayed ones, but ones built into their stats. The following Races are included as playable characters: HUMANS Humans are the most prosperous and oldest of the wasteland races. As such, they are considered the standard for all things. REVENANTS Revenants were once human, but they were born with a recessive gene that activated when they developed radiation sickness. MUTANTS Mutants are the result of births from mothers who were exposed to moderate levels of radiation during pregnancy. FREEKS Freeks are mutated humans, just like mutants except their changes are mental, not physical. SIMIANS Simians are descended from Old World primates whose evolution was kickstarted by radiation. While not all primates evolved, many did, and these are their children and grandchildren. SAURIANS Saurians are reptilian extraterrestrials, from the Alpha Draconis system 300 light years from Earth. FACTIONS Where there are humans, there are divisions. All known life divides into tribes, clans, parties, or teams. The wasteland is no different. What Remains will have two dozen Factions at launch. Eight factions will span the entire length of North America, six will have a presence scattered throughout North America, and six more will be focused specifically on Tennessee. Future books will include regional factions all over the continent, as well as themed factions based on core concepts. BESTIARY No tabletop RPG is complete without monsters, NPCs, and enemies. We have pages of creatures, domestic and wild, for players to encounter. Some are harmless and cuddly, while others will (literally) eat you alive. We have more pages of humanoid NPCs for your GM to use to fill out the world with interesting, dangerous, and helpful characters. Unlike some other tabletop RPGs, the What Remains core rulebook will contain everything you need to run a campaign. Character Creation, Equipment, Factions, and Bestiary, all rolled into one book. No more buying separate Player’s Handbook, GM’s Guidebook, and Bestiary separately. All the fun, with 1/3 of the purchases.
